Learn Chinese with Me (English Version) is a series of introductory textbooks designed for native English speakers studying Chinese, especially high school students, i.e. teenagers aged 15-18. The series is composed of a student’s book, a teacher’s book, a workbook and CDs, a DVD-ROM, Chinese characters cards, and words and phrases cards.
The main goal of the editors in compiling Learn Chinese with Me (English Version) was to cultivate high school students’ interest in learning Chinese. The framework design as well as the selection of language material incorporates the most recent research into the acquisition of Chinese as the second language. The content, chosen for its natural language as well as its interest to students, is arranged according to the rules of second language learning. To improve learners’ communicative competence, the presentation of grammar points is based on the function of language expression, and language materials are arranged in the order of topics.
Since our contributors are all teachers of Chinese as the second language, their own teaching experience has contributed greatly to the development of these books. In addition, the suggestions and feedback from numerous Chinese language teachers teaching currently aided our design of the textbooks and arrangement of the content based on a wide spectrum of knowledge and experience, both academic and practical.
